Wade MacLauchlan

Wade MacLauchlan is premier of Prince Edward Island. He was sworn in on February 23, 2015, following a leadership vote in which he was the only candidate, taking over for Robert Ghiz.

Premier MacLauchlan held a long-standing academic career before joining politics. He holds a Masters of Laws from the University of New Brunswick, was a law professor at Dalhousie University and the Dean of UNB’s Law School.

In 1999, MacLauchlan became President of the University of PEI, a position that he held until 2011.

In 2008, MacLauchlan was named to the Order of Canada. He was named to the Order of Prince Edward Island in 2014 and won the Institute of Public Administration of Canada’s (IPAC) Award for Excellence in Public Service in 2010.

At the time he was sworn in, MacLauchlan became PEI’s first openly gay premier, and the first openly gay male premier in Canada.
Under his leadership, the PEI Liberals retained power in the legislative assembly, winning 18 of 27 seats in the May 4, 2015, election.
