Sven Spengemann is the Liberal Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Lakeshore. He was elected to the House of Commons in 2015. He is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security and the Standing Committee on National Defence.
Spengemann was born in Berlin, Germany, and emigrated to Canada with his family at age 14. They settled in the Credit Woodlands neighbourhood of Mississauga.
Spengemann has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto (Mississauga) and a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School. He earned his Master of Laws in European Union Law at the Collège d’Europe in Bruges, Belgium and his doctorate at Harvard Law School in the field of political and constitutional theory.
In the course of his studies, Spengemann earned a number of awards and distinctions, including a Canada-US Fulbright Scholarship. In 2008, Osgoode Hall Law School recognized his academic and professional achievements with a Gold Key Alumni award.
Spengemann’s professional experience spans the private sector, academia, government and international affairs. From 2005 until 2012, he served with the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq. As a senior UN official, Mr. Spengemann led a Baghdadbased team of international and Iraqi experts who assisted the Iraqi Parliament and Government of Iraq with political, constitutional and legal reforms.
Spengemann also worked in the Government of Canada’s Privy Council Office in Ottawa where he was part of the team that supported Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s Smart Regulation initiative.
In 2012, upon completion of his UN service in Iraq, Mr. Spengemann became a member of the Riding Association of MississaugaLakeshore and took on the portfolio of VP Communications and Outreach. In 2014 he sought and won the federal Liberal nomination for the riding.
He particularly enjoys working with young people who are embarking on their career path and is an active member of the community of MississaugaLakeshore. He volunteers at the Compass Food Bank and serves on the Board of Directors of United Way of Peel Region and the UTM Alumni Association. He is also an Advisor to the Peel Multicultural Council.
