Peter Taptuna

Peter Taptuna is the Premier of Nunavut and MLA for Kugluktuk.

Taptuna is a Residential School Survivor, having attended a school in Inuvik in the Northwest Territories.

He spent thirteen years working in the oil and gas industry, including a spell on an offshore rig in the Beaufort Sea where he was part of the first and only all-Inuit drilling crew. He also held positions at the Lupin Gold Mine and the Kugluktuk Hunters and Gatherers Association.

Taptuna was a member of the Kugluktuk Municipal Council for five years from 1999 to 2004, and served as Deputy Mayor in that time.

He was first elected to the territorial legislature in 2008, taking 60% of the votes in his riding. He served as Minister of Economic Development and Transportation.

In 2013, Taptuna won the Premiership after being re-elected in his riding, becoming just the third in the young territory’s history.

His other roles in the Nunavut government have included serving as Minister Responsible for the Nunavut Development Corporation, Minister of Energy, Minister Responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corporation, Minister Responsible for Mines and Minister Responsible for the Nunavut Business Credit Corporation.

Taptuna holds a diploma in Management Studies, and has earned journeyman and red seal trades certificates. He was also Chair of Kitikmeot Corporation.
