Before being elected as the Member of Parliament for Mississauga East–Cooksville, Peter Fonseca served the region in the Ontario legislature for two terms serving as the cabinet minister for Labour and Tourism and Recreation under Premier Dalton McGuinty. He had worked as a parliamentary assistant to George Smitherman and to Jim Watson when they served in the Ontario cabinet.
Before running for office Fonseca worked as a performance management consultant for the Coach Corporation. He also ran an importing and distributing company in Portugal.
Fonseca is a former Olympian, representing Canada in Atlanta in 2006 in the marathon event.
Fonseca was born in Lisbon, Portugal and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1968. He attended the University of Oregon on an athletic scholarship. He has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Windsor.
Very active in the community, Fonseca sits on the boards of the Carassauga Festival et de la Luso Canadian Charitable Society. He is also active with the Portuguese Charities Foundation, Mississauga Food Bank, Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre, and the Mississauga Ukrainian Church.
Fonseca is married to Chris Fonseca, a municipal councillor. They have two children.
