Nick Whalen

St. John’s East


The new MP for St. John’s East, Nick Whalen is a lawyer by trade, a partner at McInnes Cooper practicing corporate commercial law, energy law and intellectual property law. He has been recognized as one of the best lawyers in Canada for his practice in information technology and intellectual property law.

Whalen has a Bachelor of Laws from McGill University and a Bachelor’s and Master’s in engineering from Queen’s University. He is also fluently bilingual and speaks conversational German.

Whalen has volunteered with a number of community organizations. He is the director of the Parkinsons Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and serves as director and corporate secretary of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy of Canada, an organization that raises funds for a wildlife sanctuary in Kenya and sustainable development in that country.

Whalen is married to Sarah Noble, the head of emergency psychiatry for Eastern Health and residency program director for psychiatry at Memorial University medical school. They have two children.

His father is Norm Whalen, the former president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Party who also served as campaign manager to former Premier Clyde Wells. Whalen has been an active member of the Liberal Party for years and has served as party treasurer. He is currently a member on the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates.
