Michael McLeod

Northwest Territories


The new MP for Northwest Territories, Michael McLeod, was born and raised in Fort Providence, NWT. He served in the territory’s legislative assembly between 1999 and 2011. During that time he served as the Minister of Transportation and Minister of Public Works and Services.

Since leaving office he has worked with the territorial government as Tourism Development Officer and also as the director of the Mackenzie River Environmental Impact Review Board.

He is also the one-­time Mayor of Fort Providence, chosen by the Dene Council at the age of 22, the former president of his Métis Local and vice­-president of the Deh Cho Regional Council.

Before entering politics McLeod was self-­employed as a contractor and also served as a Major Corporal with the Canadian Junior Rangers.

McLeod has been a member of the Northwest Territories Tourism, NWT Public Utilities, and Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Boards. He has a diploma in Management Studies from Arctic College.

McLeod’s brother, Bob McLeod is also an MLA and the current Premier of the Northwest Territories.
