Businessman Michael Levitt is the newly elected Liberal MP for York Centre. He was born in Scotland and emigrated to Canada with his family at the age of 14.
Before being elected, Levitt was a partner and vice-president of business development for the Benjamin Group. Michael Levitt is the Liberal candidate for the riding of York Centre. He currently serves as a partner and as Vice President of Business Development for the Benjamin Group, which offers funeral services catered to Jewish rituals. Levitt was also president of Benjamin’s Landmark Monuments.
Levitt is a founding member of the Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee, a multi-partisan organization dedicated to involving the Jewish community in Canada’s political process.
Levitt is active in his community. He is a member of the board of governors for Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital, for the Koffler Centre of the Arts and the Jewish National Fund. He is also a member of the Bathurst Manor Action Group, a community group fighting for input on the re-development of the plaza.
Active in the Liberal Party for several years, Levitt has worked on federal provincial and municipal campaigns. He has a Bachelor’s degree in political science.
Levitt’s priorities as an MP are seniors, job growth, job training and post-secondary education. A specific, local priority is the redevelopment of Downsview Park, which Levitt says was ignored by the previous government.
