Mark Gerretsen

Kingston and the Islands

Before being elected as the new MP for Kingston and the Islands, Mark Gerretsen served the region as Mayor of Kingston for four years and as a city councillor for one term before that.

During his time as Mayor, Gerretsen created the Mayor’s Task Force on Development, mandated to improve customer service for residents, businesses and developers. He also led the development of the Age-Friendly Plan, which focused on making Kingston livable for seniors. He was a member of the Large Urban Mayors’ Caucus of Ontario, working with municipal leaders from across the province on issues like increased infrastructure investment and investment in social housing, and payments in lieu of taxes.

Gerretsen has a degree in economics from Queen’s University and studied computer engineering at St. Lawrence College.

Gerretsen was born and raised in Kingston. He is married and has one son. His father, John Gerretsen, also served as Kingston’s Mayor and as an MPP for the region.
