The new Liberal MP for Nickel Belt, Marc Serré, is the son of the former Liberal MP for Nickel Belt, Gaetan Serré, who represented the riding from 1968 to 1972. His uncle, Benoît Serré also served in the House of Commons.
Before being elected to represent Nickle Belt, Serré worked as manager of business services for EastLink in Ontario. He is an award winning telecom technologies researcher and developer. He was awarded the 2013 IWAY award for his achievement in adaptive technology. Serré has a Bachelor of Commerce with a specialization in human resources and marketing from Laurentian University.
Serré has previously served as a school trusteed in Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and Valley-East. He was a municipal councillor in West Nipissing and served on that community’s hospital board and the planning committee. Serré stood as a candidate for Mayor of Greater Sudbury in 2010, but withdrew his candidacy before the election.
In 2009 he received the 2009 Ontario Community Action Award for his work in the non-profit sector.
