The new Member of Parliament for Elgin–Middlesex–London, Karen Vecchio, has been named the Official Opposition Critic for Families, Children and Social Development.
Before being elected, Vecchio owned and operated the Coffee Grind coffee shop in London.
After selling her business she worked in management at the New Sarum Diner. She also worked as an executive assistance to the former MP for Elgin–Middlesex–London, Joe Preston. In 2014 she was the runner-up as Best Conservative Constituency Staffer in the Hill Times. She says that working with Preston made her realize what kind of an impact an MP can have for their community.
She says that infrastructure is a major priority in Elgin–Middlesex–London, particularly fixing roads, bridges and building upgrades.
Veccchio grew up on a turkey and pig farm near Sparta, Ontario. She attended the University of Western Ontario before graduating from Georgian College in dental health. She is an active volunteer in her community, working with the Talbot Teen Centre, Habitat for Humanity and the St. Thomas and District Chamber of Commerce.
She is married and a mother of five.
