The MP for Brampton West, Khera was born in Delhi, India and emigrated to Canada with her parents as a child. She is the youngest Liberal MP in the House and has been named Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue
A registered nurse, Khera has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from York University. Before the 2015 election she was working in the oncology unit at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.
She has previously worked with the Centre of Addictions and Mental Health, the Peel Family Shelter and the William Osler Health Centre.
Khera is active in her community. She has served as the chair of the South Asian Canadians Heritage Foundation and as mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel. She was also an event coordinator for the Sick Kids Foundation.
Khera is the onetime host of Youth Vision, a local TV talk show that focused on issues facing young South Asian Canadians.
Khera’s brother is an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
