Dr. John Haggie is the Minister of Health and Community Services for Newfoundland & Labrador.
From 2011 to 2012, Haggie served as president of the Canadian Medical Association.
Born and raised in the UK, Haggie moved to Newfoundland in 1993. He served as consulting surgeon for Grenfell Region Health Services, and ran a referral-based clinic specializing in gastrointestinal, vascular and thoraic surgery.
In 1997, he became attending surgeon of general and vascular surgery at the James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander. He became Chief of the Department of Surgery in 1999, and took over as chief of staff in 2008.
In 2002, he was elected president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association, and led the NLMA to its first ever job action.
With the CMA, he served on the Ad Hoc Working Group on pharmaceutical issues, and the Committee on Education and Professional Development.
He was named to the provincial Cabinet in 2015.
