John Brassard, the first MP elected in the new riding of Barrie–Innisfil, is the Official Opposition Critic for Veterans Affairs.
Before being elected to the House of Commons, Brassard was a city councillor in Barrie for almost a decade. He was well known Barrie for his constituency work and his community involvement. As a councillor, Brassard served as chair of the city’s Community Services, Economic Development, Infrastructure, Development Services and Transit committee as well as being a member of the city council’s finance committee.
Prior to that he spent 30 years as a firefighter with the City of York and the City of Markham.
He also served as part of the executive on the Markham Professional Firefighters Association during that time, spending three years as president of the association. This experience gave him good experience in labour relations.
