Jean-Claude Poissant

La Prairie

First elected to the House of Commons in 2015, Jean-Claude Poissant serves as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood.

Poissant is well suited to this role as a fourth-generation dairy and grain farmer. He was the Director of the local Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA) for more than two decades and as director of the Société d’agriculture de La Prairie and the Coopérative Internet Saint-Mathieu.

He has also served as a producer-ambassador for the Fédération des producteurs de lait du Québec and the president of the Syndicat du lait. He is a passionate advocate for the ag-sector and has spent time educating people of all ages in the importance of agriculture in everyday life and the of balancing the economic development of a community with protecting farmland.

Poissant was heavily involved in creating Quebec’s first respite centre for farmers in his role as president of Au cœur des familles agricoles, an organization dedicated to creating support networks amongst farmers. He was also a driving force behind the creation of a guide for rural communities, the Guide du bon voisinage en milieu rural.

Before being election to the House of Commons he served as a municipal councillor. He also worked as director of the Maison des jeunes de Saint-Philippe, a youth community centre in the riding.

Poissant is a father of two and his son is following in his footsteps taking over the family farm.
