Navdeep Bains was reelected as the MP for Mississauga–Malton in 2015 after serving in the House of Commons between 2004 and 2011 for the now-dissolved riding of Mississauga — Brampton South. He has been named the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
He has previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and as the Liberal Critic for Public Works and Government Services, the Treasury Board, International Trade, Natural Resources, and Small Business and Tourism.
In 2011 he introduced a Private Member’s Bill, C-633, An Act to amend the Statutory Instruments Act (regulatory reduction).
Since 2011 he has been a visiting professor at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management. He also worked for several years doing accounting and financial analysis for the Ford Motor Company of Canada. Bains is a Certified Management Accountant and holds an MBA with a specialization in finance.
Bains is also active as a volunteer in his community, working with the Mississauga Food Bank, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Guru Gobind Singh Children’s Foundation. He served on the board of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
