Calgary Forest Lawn
Deepak Obhrai was first elected the MP for Calgary East in 1997 under the Reform Party banner. He was elected in the newly redistributed riding of Calgary Forest Lawn in 2015 with 48 per cent of the vote. He is the Official Opposition Critic for International Development. He is now one of the longest serving Conservative MPs in the House of Commons.
Before the most recent election, Obhrai had served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation. In September 2013 he was appointed to Her Majesty’s Privy Council for Canada on the advice of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
In 2014 Obhrai was recognized with the Pride of India Award from the Indo-American Friends Group in Washington DC, and the Indo-American Business Chamber for his work in strengthening Canada’s political, social and cultural relations with India and his work increasing Indo-Canadians’ participation in pluralistic political activity.
He is married with three grown children and two grandchildren. Obhrai was born in Tanzania. He lived in India and the United Kingdom before emigrating to Canada with his family in 1977.
