Greg Fergus is the new MP for Hull–Aylmer and has been named Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
Fergus is the formal National Director of the Liberal Party of Canada, named to that position by former leader Stéphane Dion. He had previously served as the president of the Young Liberals of Canada and gained national attention for supporting a motion calling on the party to support the legalization of same-sex marriage.
As National Director he moved to unite people under the Liberal banner who would not have considered joining an establishment party by themselves.
He has worked as a policy advisor to Liberal Ministers Pierre Pettigrew and Jim Peterson.
Fergus has two Bachelor’s degrees, one in social science from the University of Ottawa and the other in international relations from Carleton University. He worked as a Parliamentary Page while studying at the University of Ottawa. He has does some Master’s level work in international relations. Before his appointment as National Director, Fergus had been working as director of industry practices for Rx&D, now Innovative Medicines Canada.
Fergus is active in his riding. He has been vice-president of his neighbourhood association and involved on elementary and secondary school committees.
He is married with three children. His wife, Julie Cool, is a researcher for the Library of Parliament who has taken a leave of absence while her husband sits as an MP.
