The new MP for Scarborough–Rouge Park, Gary Anandasangaree, is an internationally recognized human rights lawyer who runs his own firm, Gary Anandasangaree & Associates in Scarborough.
Anandasangaree has a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Carleton University and a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. On graduation he was awarded the “One to Watch” Gold Key Award. He has also been awarded the South Asian Bar Association’s Young Practitioner Award.
Anandasangaree was called to the Ontario Bar in 2006. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association and the Ontario Bar Association. As a lawyer, Anandasangaree has represented Lawyer’s Rights Watch Canada at the United Nations. He also lectures at the Centennial College for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Before becoming a lawyer, Anandasangaree was a real estate broker. He currently serves as Counsel to the Independent Mortgage Brokers Association of Ontario.
Anandasangaree is active in the Tamil community. He is the one-time chair of the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre and president of the Canadian Tamils’ Chamber of Commerce. He has also acted as counsel to the Canadian Tamil Congress.
He has also served as legal counsel for the Independent Mortgage Brokers and Agents and as a member of the Toronto Police Chief’s Advisory Board. Anandasangaree has also been on the board of Toronto’s Youth Challenge Fund, an organization that invests in community projects and supports youth.
Anandasangaree has won several awards for his community work including a Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Henry Marshall Tory Award for Service.
