Filomena Tassi is the newly elected Liberal MP for Hamilton West–Ancaster–Dundas. She currently serves as Deputy Government Whip.
Prior to running for the House of Commons, Tassi ran for the Liberals provincially and served as a Catholic School Trustee.During the 2015 election Tassi’s campaign faced some questions because of the Liberal leader’s statement that all his candidates would support a woman’s right to choose. Trudeau was forced to clarify that despite statements she had made in the past, Tassi had agreed to support the legal right to abortion.
Tassi has a law degree from the University of Western Ontario. She practiced corporate law for six years before leaving to raise her family. After becoming a high school Chaplain for the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board. She later returned to school at the University of Waterloo to earn her Master’s in Religious Education. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in education.
She has continued to work as a Chaplain. Through that work she helped establish the Dominican Republic Education and Medical Support (DREAMS) program, which allows students to live and work with the underprivileged. In 2010 Tassi received the Catholic School Chaplains of Ontario’s Brian Halferty Award for exemplary service.
Tassi was born and raised in Hamilton. Her father was a steelworker. She now lives in the city with her husband and two children. She has been a board member for the St. Joseph’s Hospital and for the Catholic Youth Organization and has volunteered her time with numerous other local organizations.
