The new MP for Calgary Skyview, Darshan Singh Kang is a former member of the Alberta Legislative Assembly. He first ran in 2004 and was elected in 2008 for Calgary–McCall. As an MLA, Kang served on the Standing Committees for Public Accounts, and for Families and Communities. He served as the Alberta Liberal Party’s Whip and also as the Critic for Transportation, Service Alberta, Infrastructure, Tourism and Parks and Recreation. He also worked as an MLA to secure a provincial government grant for the Genesis Centre, a Calgary community centre. He was also outspoken in his support of the Airport Trail Tunnel.
Kang emigrated to Canada from India in 1970. Before entering politics he worked as a journeyman welder and a commercial realtor. He went on to be named the top realtor in his company and the fifth highest performer in Alberta.
Kang has been active in several community associations. He is an active supporter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and has helped fundraise for the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
He has said the biggest issue in the riding at the moment is job security.
